What Are Tension Headaches?

Tension headaches are one of the most common types of headaches, and they can be caused by several different things. Usually, they're the result of muscle tension in the neck and shoulders. This muscle tension can be caused by poor posture, stress, eyestrain, or even sleeping in an awkward position.

Symptoms of Tension Headaches

Tension headaches can vary in intensity, but usually, they're relatively mild. That said, they can still be quite debilitating. Common symptoms include:

  • Dull, aching pain in the head or neck
  • Muscle tenderness in the head or neck
  • Jaw pain
  • Earache
  • Shoulder pain
  • Stiffness in the neck
  • Sensitivity to light or noise
  • Fatigue or sleepiness

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms regularly, it's time to see a chiropractor. Especially if over-the-counter pain medication isn't providing relief.

Types of Tension Headaches

There are two main types of tension headaches: episodic and chronic.

Episodic tension headaches occur less than 15 days per month, while chronic tension headaches occur more than 15 days per month. Both types of tension headaches can be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers, but chronic tension headaches may also require prescription medication. In addition, relaxation techniques and stress management may help to prevent future episodes.

Where Does Tension Headaches Hurt?

The pain is usually felt on both sides of the head, and it may also cause the neck and shoulders to feel tight. In some cases, the pain may be severe enough to interfere with daily activities. Tension headaches are often aggravated by stress, anxiety, fatigue, and poor posture.

Although they can be uncomfortable, tension headaches are not typically associated with other symptoms, such as nausea or vomiting. Treatment for tension headaches frequently includes massage or relaxation therapy.
